Can anybody explain the symbolism behind taking an old pair of shoes, tying them together and then flinging them around telephone/power lines? I've been noticing this more and more. Is it a gang thing? Any suggestions on how to get this aerial litter removed?
Tim

its said to be a way to know that you can buy drugs from the house, or gang related... marking turf...HOWEVER in most cases its kids
The electric workers can remove them if they are up there and see them. In most cases the shoes are usually back the next day. I' imagine you could call the city and ask them to remove it. They are usually pretty attentive--especially of it is in a nice part of the city.

Location: Lynn, MA.
But Lynn is supposed to be known for shoes!

I've even seen this in "nice" suburban subdivisions. I'm not sure that it carries the same weight or meaning it used to, but maybe the gangs here are a little behind the times. I would call the police National Grid anyway because it's probably not a good idea to have them up there and it is a bit off-putting.
